Bernese Mountain Dog: temperament, care and good with kids

Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a gentle giant with a calm, kind nature. A great guardian and nanny for children, they need space and a cooler environment.

Temperament

They're even-tempered, devoted and friendly — tender and patient with family, reservedly watchful with strangers. Despite their size, they're a gentle, calm dog.

Good with children

★★★★★

They're among the kindest breeds with children — patient and protective. Because of their size and strength, supervise contact with toddlers so they don't knock anyone over.

Care & upkeep

The long coat needs brushing two to three times a week, more during shedding. Sadly the breed has a shorter lifespan and tendencies toward joint and cancer conditions.

Exercise & daily routine

They need regular but not extreme exercise — calm walks and space. They tolerate heat poorly, so walk in the cool in summer. A house with a yard is ideal.

Can you handle the daily care?

TestDog simulates the real routine of caring for a virtual dog — feeding in set windows and walks tracked by your pedometer. Try the responsibility for real before you get a Bernese Mountain Dog or any other breed.
