Border Collie: temperament, care and good with kids

The Border Collie is considered the smartest dog breed. They're incredibly trainable and hard-working — and have a huge need for exercise and tasks that makes them a dog for active people only.
Temperament
They're sharp, focused and forever ready to work. Without a job they get bored and find their own — often unwanted — activity. They tend to be sensitive and strongly bonded to their person.
Good with children
★★★
They can be great with children, but their herding instinct leads them to 'gather' the kids — circling and nipping at heels. They need training and supervision, hence three stars.
Care & upkeep
The medium to semi-long coat needs brushing once or twice a week. The demands are in the head, not the coat — mental work is key.
Exercise & daily routine
They need at least two hours of active exercise plus tasks or a dog sport (agility, flyball). Without that, they suffer and become problematic.
Can you handle the daily care?
TestDog simulates the real routine of caring for a virtual dog — feeding in set windows and walks tracked by your pedometer. Try the responsibility for real before you get a Border Collie or any other breed.
