Boxer: temperament, care and good with kids

The Boxer is a forever-young, energetic and protective dog. Devoted to their family and playful even in adulthood, they need plenty of exercise and consistent training.
Temperament
Boxers are spirited, cheerful and strongly bonded to their family. They tend to be alert and protective, yet cuddly with loved ones. They stay puppy-like for a long time.
Good with children
★★★★
They're devoted and playful with children and often make a great nanny. Because of their strength and enthusiasm, supervise contact with small kids so no one gets knocked over in play.
Care & upkeep
The short coat is low-maintenance — occasional brushing is enough. As a brachycephalic breed the Boxer tolerates heat poorly and has tendencies toward heart and cancer conditions.
Exercise & daily routine
They need lots of exercise and occupation, ideally 1–2 hours a day. An under-exercised Boxer is restless and may become destructive. They handle active sports and games well.
Can you handle the daily care?
TestDog simulates the real routine of caring for a virtual dog — feeding in set windows and walks tracked by your pedometer. Try the responsibility for real before you get a Boxer or any other breed.
