Chihuahua: temperament, care and good with kids

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed with a big personality. They're devoted and cuddly with their family, while also fragile and wary of strangers — less suited to very young children.
Temperament
They're lively, self-assured and strongly fixated on one person. They tend to be distrustful and vocal toward strangers. Despite their tiny size they have courage and a mind of their own.
Good with children
★★
Because of their fragility and lower tolerance for rough handling, Chihuahuas suit small children only to a limited degree (two stars). They're better for homes with older, considerate children or for adults.
Care & upkeep
Depending on type (smooth or long coat), care is minimal to mild. Chihuahuas tolerate cold poorly — they need a coat in winter. Watch the teeth, which are prone to tartar.
Exercise & daily routine
Short walks and play at home are enough. They're a low-exercise breed, but they need all the more closeness and attention.
