French Bulldog: temperament, care and good with kids

French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is one of the most popular small dogs in Europe. Compact, friendly and low on exercise needs — at first glance an ideal apartment dog. They also come with a few health specifics worth knowing up front.

Temperament

The 'Frenchie' is a people dog. They love being close to family, playful and cuddly but not overly energetic. Unlike many small dogs they aren't excessive barkers, so they're relatively quiet neighbors. They're sociable with strangers and get on well with other dogs.

Good with children

★★★★

The French Bulldog suits children well. They're playful, tolerant and not easily rattled by small clumsy handling. Supervise contact with very young children — their compact build means they can be knocked over or squeezed. With school-age kids they usually get on wonderfully.

Care & upkeep

The coat is short, smooth and easy to maintain — brushing once a week is enough. The facial skin folds need more attention: clean them regularly and keep them dry to prevent skin inflammation. They're a brachycephalic breed, so watch for heat and breathing.

Exercise & daily routine

The French Bulldog doesn't need hours of exercise. Two shorter walks a day (30–45 minutes total) fully cover their physical and mental needs. Excess strain actually harms them, especially in warm weather.

Who the French Bulldog suits

A great choice for families and individuals in apartments looking for a friendly companion with low exercise needs. Suitable for less active people and seniors too. Less suitable for those away all day — the Frenchie handles being alone worse than more independent breeds.
