Jack Russell Terrier: temperament, care and good with kids

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small dog with a huge dose of energy and courage. They're clever and cheerful, but headstrong and very active — definitely not a calm lap dog.
Temperament
They're spirited, tireless and self-assured. They love movement, play and hunting. Without occupation they get bored and can be noisy and destructive. They need consistent training.
Good with children
★★★
They can be a great play buddy, but their energy and low tolerance for being pestered mean supervision is a must — especially with small children. Hence three stars.
Care & upkeep
The short coat is low-maintenance — occasional brushing is enough. The demands are in the temperament, not the upkeep — the key is to burn energy and occupy the mind.
Exercise & daily routine
They need surprisingly much exercise and play for their size — over an hour a day plus scent and hunting activities. Without it, they're restless and noisy.
Can you handle the daily care?
TestDog simulates the real routine of caring for a virtual dog — feeding in set windows and walks tracked by your pedometer. Try the responsibility for real before you get a Jack Russell Terrier or any other breed.
