Pug: temperament, care and good with kids

Pug

The Pug is an easygoing, affectionate little companion with an unmistakable face. They dislike hard exertion and make a classic apartment lap dog — with a few health specifics.

Temperament

They're friendly, cuddly and calm. They love being close to people and cope poorly with being alone. They're usually cheerful and non-confrontational, welcoming to children and strangers.

Good with children

★★★★

They suit children well thanks to their mild, cuddly nature. Because of their small size and sensitive breathing, make sure children don't overtax them or leave them in the heat.

Care & upkeep

The short coat sheds more than you'd expect — brush once a week. Cleaning the facial skin folds and watching weight are essential. As a brachycephalic breed, Pugs breathe with more effort.

Exercise & daily routine

Short walks are enough, around 30–45 minutes a day. They don't tolerate heat or strain — in summer walk only in the cool and never leave them in a car.
